Remembering Chua Ek Kay PDF Print E-mail

5 Dec 2011

Dear Catholic High Alumni

Remembering Chua Ek Kay

As you may be aware, Chua Ek Kay (1947 – 2008) was a past student of the Catholic High School, our Alma Mater. He was a famous artist who was hailed as the "bridge between Asian and Western art" with a unique painting style using Chinese ink on paper that demonstrated an ingenious blend of traditional Chinese painting forms with Western art theories and techniques. In his life time, for his contribution to the local art scene, he had received numerous awards, including the Cultural Medallion for Art in 1999, which is the nation’s highest award for an artist.

As a student in the school, Ek Kay often took part in calligraphy and classical poetry activities. As an alumnus, he had given his full support to CHA by working closely to organise and participate in our activities. He had generously donated 25 pieces of his Art to our school, four of which are paintings of the former secondary school buildings at the Queen Street.

We are glad to inform you that two events have been planned in 2012 in honour of Chua Ek Kay.

  1. Chua Ek Kay’s Painting Exhibition

The Private Museum will be organising an exhibition of Catholic High School's collection of Chinese ink paintings by Ek Kay. The exhibition will be held from 10 January 2012 and will open at 7pm.

The Private Museum was founded by old boy Daniel Teo who is a philanthropist and real estate developer. It is situated at our former secondary school building at 51 Queen Street. The museum has preserved the façade of the old building.

This exhibition is one of the museum’s public outreach programs which aim to bring the collectors and artists closer to the general public and to help foster interest and the support for art.

You can show your support by attending this meaningful and educational exhibition at The Private Museum. It is really a rare opportunity for you to have a closer look at these Art works since they are usually kept in the school campus in Bishan.

     2.   “Being and Becoming Chua Ek Kay”

A documentary film about the late Singapore Chinese ink artist Chua Ee Kay, exploring his art and struggles through a series of personal perspectives from people intimately connected with his life and work has been proposed by Executive Producer, Jin-Theng Craven of a local production company, Second Avenue Productions (Pte) Ltd.   This film is a tribute to a great Singaporean artist reflecting on our alumnus Ek  Kay’s  achievements and is part of a larger enterprise to promote Singaporean artists and their art to a wide audience.  Educating and inspiring viewers now and in the future, the film will be a lasting record of one quiet revolutionary’s private vision and endeavour.

A total of $200,000 (excluding taxes) is required for the film production and the producer is appealing and seeking for co-sponsor & financial donations.  Donations can be from an individual or a group of individuals.

Alumni interested to co- sponsor or donate generously to support the project can contact Ms Cecilia Ong at her mobile 90116307 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for details.

1. The Private Museum

The Private Museum

This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it 。
